New Cape May Convention Hall Completes Connections & Energizes Promenade

Kimmel Bogrette is working with the City of Cape May, NJ, to design a new Convention Hall that will replace the current hall, which is currently closed because of structural problems. The design responds to the City’s desire to have a building reminiscent of the one built in 1917 and destroyed by a hurricane in 1962. While far from being a copy of the original, the new design has a timeless quality that complements Cape May’s famous Victorian architectural style, while also conveying a dramatic, modern presence. Flying flags and changeable banners around the promenade entrance will give the Hall a lively, festive appearance. The new Hall will offer more engaging connections to the promenade and better capture dramatic views of the beach and surf to the east and south. The Hall is comprised of 32,000 square feet and will include retail stores along the promenade side, a larger space (8,500 square feet) for the exhibit hall and auditorium, a spacious lobby with additional pre-function space, a skate rental room, kitchen and restaurant with an ocean view. The second floor includes spaces for public meetings, events and conference rooms, administrative offices, and a balcony level for the auditorium. The new Hall will offer all of the amenities and technology needed to host shows, events and exhibits and provide a vibrant beachfront venue for a diverse range of activities. A tremendous buzz is being generated about this project in the Cape May area and beyond because of the building’s potential to become a landmark gathering place for visitors and residents of this beloved seaside resort.
